Ocular prostheses

An ocular prosthesis is a custom-made medical device. It must be manufactured in a certified prosthetic laboratory for this purpose and fitted by professionals with recognized academic qualifications and experience. In Portugal, only in São Martinho Óptica can you enjoy this type of service. We manufacture and fit your eye prosthesis in Coimbra, Portugal.

Bespoke eye prostheses

Each ocular prosthesis is totally unique, manufactured after assessing the patient’s eye socket, and then followed up with a detailed work plan to meet the needs of each case and optimally fitted to the respective eye or anophthalmic socket.

Children’s eye prostheses

For children, the correct fitting of a bespoke eye prosthesis is crucial because it plays a key role in their facial development.

We provide a dedicated children’s service that ensures the child has a lifelong positive relationship with their prosthesis.

Stages in the prosthetic treatment

Assessment and study of the ocular socket, the posterior surface of the mould and making a record of data

The colour of the iris is painted by hand and in the presence of the patient to obtain the best possible combination of colours

Fitting and delivering the ocular prosthesis to the patient

Instructions for handling and cleaning of ocular prosthesis, and scheduling follow-up appointments

Avaliação e estudo da cavidade ocular, conceção do molde da face posterior e registo

Pintura da cor da íris à mão e na presença do paciente, por forma a obtermos a melhor combinação possível de cores

Eye prosthesis maintenance

We ADVISE patients to remove and clean the ocular prosthesis once a month to avoid protein deposits accumulating on its surface.

Cleaning and maintenance products are recommended by the ocularist.

We RECOMMEND that the prosthesis is checked and polished in our facilities on a yearly basis to maintain the brightness, comfort, and quality of the device, as well as the health of the tissues surrounding the anophthalmic socket.
